A Cabin – Deer and Trees, oh my! There’s nothing quite like heading north to the Upper Peninsula, where the world slows down and nature takes center stage. Every trip brings new sights—deer wandering through the trees, smoke rising from chimneys, and that crisp, woodsy air that feels like a hug. That’s exactly the feeling I wanted to bring into today’s project: A Cabin Deer and Trees card that captures the outdoors in ink and cardstock. (Minus the mosquitoes—because nobody wants those in their craft room.)
Inspiration Behind the Design
Whenever Dave and I are at our U.P. place, I find myself surrounded by inspiration. Sometimes it’s the wildlife, sometimes it’s the peace and quiet… and sometimes it’s me yelling, “Did you SEE that deer?!” as I nearly trip over my own tea cup.
This card uses the Woodland Scenery stamp set (166060) paired with a sentiment from the Peace on Earth set (165918). Together, they create a cozy woodland scene featuring a rustic cabin, a pair of deer, and a stand of bare trees—just like the views that greet us each morning (only my stamped trees don’t need raking).
And because I can’t resist a good fold, I went with the matchbox fold. It’s simple, fun, and adds a little “wow” factor without making me feel like I need an engineering degree.

Rustic Charm with Country Woods
To keep the rustic theme strong, I pulled out the Country Woods Designer Series Paper. With its weathered patterns, it looks like I peeled it right off the side of a barn. Add a wrap of Linen Thread (the Early Espresso from the Early Espresso & Old Olive pack), and suddenly this card has more texture than a campfire s’more.
The color palette? All browns, all day. Earthy, warm, and easy. Honestly, it’s like a pumpkin spice muffin without the calories.

A Cabin Deer and Trees for More Than Cards
One of the things I love about this set is that it’s not limited to cards. These images are begging to jump onto a scrapbook page. Imagine a two-page spread full of cabins, deer, and trees framing your latest hiking or camping trip photos. (Bonus: scrapbook deer don’t eat your hostas.)
If you’d like me to create one of those outdoor-themed layouts in a future live, let me know in the comments. I’ll happily trade my rake for adhesive.
My Final Thoughts
This card might be made of cardstock and ink, but it’s also a slice of my U.P. life—complete with cabins, deer, and trees (but no black bears, thankfully). It’s the perfect way to send warm wishes to someone starting a new journey. And yes, it’s quick enough that you can still get dinner on the table afterward.
Want to try it yourself? Here are the cutting measurements I used:
- Pecan Pie cardstock: 8 1/2″ x 11″, scored at 4 1/4″ & 5 1/4″
- Early Espresso cardstock: 5 1/2″ x 7/8″, 5 1/4″ x 3″
- Basic White cardstock: 5 1/4″ x 3″, 5″ x 2 3/4″
