Mixing Old + New = This Stunning Card You Need to Try

Mixing Old + New helps you to freshen your stamping supplies. Mixing Old + New helps you freshen your stamping supplies. If you’ve ever looked at your stash and thought, “I need something new,” I’m here to gently challenge that idea… because sometimes, you don’t need more—you just need a fresh perspective.

This week’s card is the perfect example of how combining a few newer items with things you already own can completely transform your projects. It’s simple, it’s layered, and it has that “wow, you made that?!” feel without being complicated.

Let’s start with the star of the show—the soon-to-be-released Fern & Flora bundle. This bundle brings in that soft, botanical feel that instantly elevates a card. The detailed fern die adds movement and texture, while still keeping things clean and polished.

Now here’s where the magic really happens…

Instead of pairing that new bundle with all new supplies, I reached into my current stash. I pulled out Balmy Blue, Garden Green, and Basic White cardstock, along with some older Designer Series Paper that had been sitting quietly, waiting for its moment to shine again.

And guess what? It worked beautifully.

The rich, painterly look of the DSP becomes the focal point of the card. By framing it with Balmy Blue, it gives the piece structure without taking attention away from that gorgeous design. It’s a simple layering trick, but it makes a big difference.

Mixing Old + New Creates a Fresh Look Every Time

This is where I want you to pause and really think about your own supplies.

How many papers, stamps, or embellishments do you already own that you haven’t used in a while? Probably more than you’d like to admit… and you’re not alone.

When you introduce just one new element—like this Fern & Flora bundle—it breathes new life into everything else. Suddenly, that “old” paper doesn’t feel outdated anymore. It feels intentional. Coordinated. Even trendy again.

For this card, I also brought in retiring Petunia Pop cardstock and ink, which ties everything together beautifully. The soft pink base paired with the stamped background adds a subtle layer of interest without overwhelming the design.

The background stamping is one of those quiet details that makes the whole card feel finished. It’s tone-on-tone, so it doesn’t compete with the focal panel, but it adds just enough texture to keep things interesting.

Then comes the sentiment.

Keeping it on Basic White allows it to stand out clearly against the layers beneath it. It’s simple, clean, and placed in a way that draws your eye right where it should go. No fuss. No overthinking.

And that little layered fern detail? That’s your finishing touch. It adds dimension and ties the whole botanical theme together in a way that feels effortless.

Why This Works (And Why You Should Try It)

This card works because it follows a simple formula:

  • One standout focal point
  • A mix of old and new elements
  • Coordinating colors that feel intentional
  • Clean layering with just enough detail

You don’t need a room full of brand-new supplies to create something beautiful. You just need to look at what you already have through a slightly different lens.

So here’s my challenge for you…

Pull out one new item (or even just something you haven’t used yet), then pair it with older supplies you already own. See what happens. I think you’ll be surprised at how quickly your creativity kicks back in.

And if you’re as excited about the Fern & Flora bundle as I am, keep an eye out—because the new catalog is right around the corner!

If you love this project and want to recreate it, be sure to check out my store for supplies or reach out if you have questions. I’d love to see what you come up with when you start mixing old + new in your own crafting space

Until we meet again. . .
