How to Make a Gatefold Birthday Card with a Pop Out Surprise
If you’ve ever wondered how to make a gatefold birthday card that delivers both elegance and a little surprise, this one’s for you! This week’s project is full of fun layers, a decorative pop-out element, and a color combo that feels soft and sunny—with just enough flair to make someone’s day.

This card starts with a Cloud Cover card base (5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″), folded in a traditional gatefold style. That simply means each side folds in toward the center to “close” like gates. To dress it up, I added two panels of Everyday Happiness Designer Series Paper. One on each flap—cut to 2″ x 5 1/4″. The subtle floral print creates the perfect backdrop for what’s to come.

How to Make a Gatefold Birthday Card Look Extra Special

Now for the fun part—layering! I used a combination of dies to create a bold centerpiece. The sentiment (stamped in Gray Granite ink) says “Happy Birthday.” It is layered on a sweet oval die cut from Darling Duckling cardstock. I used a slightly darker Gray Granite scrap for the die-cut leaves, which peek out from behind the sentiment like elegant little flourishes. The added texture really gives this card that “wow” moment.

But the real magic happens when you open it up. There’s a pop-out panel inside that lifts and surprises with a hidden message and extra design detail. I won’t spoil it here—you’ll want to see how that mechanism works over on the video.

On the inside, I added a Basic White panel (two pieces cut to 1 1/8″ x 2″) and used additional Basic White and Darling Duckling scraps (4″ x 3″) to create layered elements. The surprise element in the center uses clever scoring and folding, and it’s easier than it looks once you see it in action.
