Fairy & frog houses are so much fun to create. All you need is a little imagination and to gather your supplies. I am sharing a fun craft you can do with your children that doesn’t involve stamping today.
We headed up to Michigan’s Upper Penninsula for the Fourth of July. Our grandchildren love to do crafts when we get together. Some of our projects have included; a fun scarecrow out of cardboard for the fall, hand made cards to thank their teachers for a wonderful school year, Painted rocks, window stained glass decor, and gem bracelets.
Last year for the Fourth of July we created firecrackers from leftover wood blocks and pipe cleaners. We arrived a few days before the Fourth so I knew they would want to make something patriotic.
We had cleared trees from an area by our camp and had a few tree stumps that we couldn’t remove. My solution was to make some fairy and frog houses to put on top of these stumps so when the grass grows we don’t hit them with the lawn mower. So, fairy and frog houses were a solution.
Samantha and Hunter looked through the wood pile for their perfect house. Samantha picked one that had a slanted roof. Hunter’s had a flat roof. We had limited colors of paint but they learned how mixing colors together made more colors.
They spent hours painting the roofs, just the way they wanted. We then cut a smaller piece of wood into slices for the windows and doors. THey chose to paint these red, white, and blue. Hunter peeled the bark from his while Smantha left hers with the bark on.
Samantha made some of her window discs into a table and chairs for her fairy house.
Hunter used one for a chimney since his chunk of wood didn’t have one.
We had so much fun creating these houses. I enjoyed watching their imaginations soar and listening to them explain what and why they were painting different wood pieces.
Did you know fairy & frog houses need an American flag flying from them for the Fourth of July?
When they were done painting we started nailing the pieces onto the houses. Their eyes got so big as they saw their creations come together. They both said their houses weren’t done yet. They both ran to get their American flags and we put them atop of each house from the roof.
